Day 7 Recap: Madrid Open 2024

Madrid Open 2024 Day 7 Recap

2024 Madrid Open Quarterfinal Lineup Confirmed

The quarterfinal lineup for the 2024 Madrid Open has been set, with some exciting matchups on the horizon. Among those advancing to the last eight are Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, Taylor Fritz, Francisco Cerundolo, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Jiri Lehecka.

Andrey Rublev was the first to progress, looking rejuvenated after a recent run of poor form. He was followed by compatriot Daniil Medvedev. Top seed Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz both navigated tricky three-set matches to secure their spots in the quarterfinals. Notable upsets included Francisco Cerundolo defeating two-time Madrid Open champion Alexander Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime besting fifth seed Casper Ruud. Rafael Nadal saw his Madrid campaign come to an end at the hands of Jiri Lehecka in the final match of the day.

Day Seven Results

Here are the results from the Round of 16 matches:

Winner Loser Scoreline

Carlos Alcaraz (2) Jan-Lennard Struff (23) 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(4)
Daniil Medvedev (3) Alexander Bublik (17) 7-6(3), 6-4

Felix Auger-Aliassime Casper Ruud (5) 6-4, 7-5

Andrey Rublev (7) Tallon Griekspoor (24) 6-2, 6-4
Taylor Fritz (12) Hubert Hurkacz (8) 7-6(2), 6-4

Medvedev Overcomes Bublik

Daniil Medvedev showcased his resilience in a tough match against Alexander Bublik, eventually securing a 7-6(3), 6-4 victory. Despite facing a deficit in the first set, Medvedev battled back and took control of the match during a first-set tiebreak. He then established an early lead in the second set, which he held onto for the win.

After the match, Medvedev commented, “It was a tough match. I got so tired in the end, running for a lot of drop shots. That’s when you lose your concentration and start playing a bit worse. That’s what happened, but after the match, he told me he was dead also. So good for me, at least I was not the only one.”

Fritz Advances Past Hurkacz

Taylor Fritz continued his strong play on clay by defeating Hubert Hurkacz 7-6(2), 6-4 to secure his spot in the quarterfinals. Fritz, who reached the final in Munich last week, displayed a solid performance against the title-winning Hurkacz to advance in Madrid Masters 1000.

Reflecting on his tactics, Fritz said, “I started the match holding a backhand grip and then just looking at ship forehands, I feel like it was pretty good for putting returns in the court…”

Sinner and Alcaraz Also Advance

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz faced tough tests but emerged victorious in their Round of 16 matches. Sinner defeated Karen Khachanov 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, while Alcaraz overcame Jan-Lennard Struff in a grueling 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(4) battle.

Alcaraz, speaking about his match, said, “Overall, I thought Struff played some decent stuff, but on some of the bigger points, he made some poor shot choices, and Carlos proved too versatile with a few more ways to win points, even though he wasn’t consistent throughout.”

Sinner, on the other hand, mentioned, “I struggled when breaking points down in the early stages of the third set. I went through them, serving really well. Then I felt a little bit better, so I’m really happy, and let’s see what’s coming in the next round.”

Stay tuned for more exciting action from the Madrid Open!
