For the second year in a row, Australia will play in the Davis Cup final as the country ousted Finland with victories by Alex de Minaur and Alexei Popyrin.
Australia has some pretty good tennis players, and despite missing Thanasi Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios, they managed to find themselves in the final once more. They have a good core of singles players with a pretty good doubles pairing, making them a triple threat for any nation.
Alexei Popyrin got the nod earlier today against Otto Virtanen, and he proved better in two sets, setting up de Minaur to finish off the job. He played much better than a few days ago and secured a win in two simple sets to send his country through.
The opponent was Emil Ruusuuvori, who can be a very tricky player to play with his heavy baseline game. Luckily for Australia, de Minaur is as quick as Flash and tracked down many balls, which made it pretty tough for the Finnish number one.
Ruusuvuori didn’t even play badly, but he had to work for every point, and that was key. He also couldn’t create too much separation, with his serve hitting only one ace in the whole match.
He can certainly do better; however, he’s not as good of a player as de Minaur. The Australian was in contention for the ATP Finals, which tells you how well he’s played this year, and this was another solid match.
The final score ended up being 6-4 6-3 for de Minaur, who had one ace, 23 winners, and 19 unforced errors. The country will have to wait until tomorrow to find out whether they will go against Serbia or Italy.
Whoever goes through it will be a pretty tough challenge for them, especially with Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic playing as well as they have been playing recently.
