DeMarcus Cousins Receives Suspension Following Altercation with Fans Courtside in Puerto Rico

DeMarcus Cousins Receives Suspension Following Altercation with Fans Courtside in Puerto Rico

DeMarcus Cousins’ second stint in Puerto Rico came to a stunning end this week after being suspended and having his contract terminated.

The former NBA All-Star was suspended for the remainder of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional season and on top of that, had his contract torn up by the Mets de Guaynabo after an ugly altercation with fans during a Monday night game.

The incident escalated quickly when the 34-year-old made an obscene gesture toward a courtside fan, exchanged heated words, and was seen grabbing the fan’s arm before being restrained by teammates. He was hit with a second technical foul and ejected.

Things didn’t cool off in the tunnel, either. Cousins reportedly got into another shouting match with a separate fan as drinks were hurled at him from the stands.

The league handed Cousins a $4,250 fine and noted he could face an additional $5,750 pending review.

In a statement issued Tuesday night, the Mets made it clear they weren’t tolerating the behavior.

“As an organization, we strongly condemn any form of violence or provocation, whether on or off the field. Safety, respect, and sportsmanship are non-negotiable values for this franchise.”

It’s a disappointing turn for Cousins, who had been putting together a solid campaign, averaging 18.2 points and nine rebounds.

His return to the Puerto Rican league came after a productive 2023 season that saw him lead the Mets to the semifinals.

Since his time in the NBA, Cousins has bounced from Taiwan to Mongolia to Puerto Rico, trying to write a new chapter in a basketball journey that’s now hit another roadblock.
