Novak Djokovic lost the 2024 Wimbledon Championships final, but the Serbian will remain number two on the ATP Tour ahead of Carlos Alcaraz in spite of it.
Ahead of this year’s Wimbledon, the Serbian player was the number two player behind Jannik Sinner, who was assured of remaining world number one after the tournament, regardless of his result.
The Italian won a couple of matches before losing to Daniil Medvedev, which enlarged his gap to second place in the ATP Rankings. In the new edition of the ATP Rankings, he will be on top with 9,570 points, with Djokovic being number two.
The Serbian did well to make the Wimbledon final, which ensured he won’t drop any points this year. He made the final last year as well, and with the changes to the points distribution at majors this year, he gained 100 points.
That ensures that he’ll remain world number two ahead of Alcaraz, who couldn’t win any points at this event. He won the Wimbledon Championships last year, which earned him 2000 points, and he defended all of them by beating Djokovic in the 2024 Wimbledon final.
That, though, wasn’t enough to dethrone the 37-year-old from the World No. 2 position, as he needed the Serbian to lose before the final. However, he didn’t, so Djokovic now has 8,460 points, while Alcaraz remains on 8,130.
Obviously, the Spaniard will be in a perfect spot to overtake the 24-time major champion in the rest of the season because the Serbian defends the US Open title.
That’s another 2,000 points, and with the way things have gone this year, his title defense is anything but sure. As the 6th player in the 2024 ATP Race at the moment, Djokovic likely won’t be in contention for the year-end No. 1, while Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are the favorites.
