Novak Djokovic has received an injury boost ahead of the 2024 Australian Open, and former British player Laura Robson is backing the Serbian to seal another title in Melbourne.
Initial concern about Djokovic’s fitness ahead of the Australian Open arose after the 36-year-old was visibly struggling with a wrist injury during his United Cup defeat to Alex de Minaur.
However, the Serbian is set to headline a pre-Australian Open charity event at Rod Laver Arena on Thursday – a promising sign that the 24-time Grand Slam champion will be available to play in Melbourne.
With the latest news on Djokovic’s injury, several former players and pundits have started to make their predictions about the 36-year-old’s ability to secure an 11th Australian Open win.
When speaking to Tennis365 about Djokovic’s chances, Laura Robson said she is backing the Serbian to use his experience to triumph at Melbourne Park yet again.
“It’s hard to see anyone beating him in Melbourne. There is something here that works for his game and the fans are just crazy Novak Djokovic supporters here. You don’t really see that anywhere else in the world. I just feel he loves playing here.”
Even though Djokovic may not be at 100% fitness, he still poses a serious threat to the challenging pack at the Australian Open this season. Last year, Djokovic won his record 10th Australian Open and competed in the final against Stefanos Tsitsipas with a hamstring injury.
Such experience has led former players like John McEnroe to tip Djokovic to win again despite his recent injury concerns. Robson also joined in the experts who are considering the Serbian as the Melbourne favourite.
“He is struggling with this forearm issue at the moment, but he has had that before. So I assume he knows how to manage it and will be ready in time. Given that it is Djokovic, I would think that he can request a late start, given that he has won this tournament so many times.”
