The match against Italian rising star Lorenzo Musetti was a gripping contest that lasted two hours and 59 minutes, with Djokovic securing the win with a final score of 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
At 38 years old, Djokovic demonstrated his resilience by overcoming multiple challenges, including giving back breaks while clinging to serve in the decisive set. However, the veteran managed to find a way to clinch the win with a commanding love hold at 6-5.
Reflecting on the match, Djokovic noted, “It was an incredible battle. Three hours of a grueling contest, physically. It could have gone either way, so my congratulations to Lorenzo for a remarkable performance. I am extremely proud of myself for overcoming this challenge.”
Despite the triumph, Djokovic announced his withdrawal from the upcoming Nitto ATP Finals immediately following his victory. This decision came as a surprise to many, as he had qualified for the prestigious event without issue. The unfortunate reason behind his withdrawal is attributed to a persistent shoulder injury that has been troubling him throughout the season.
As fate would have it, Musetti will take Djokovic’s place as the first alternate in Turin. Following the final match, Djokovic made sure to inform Musetti that he would be making his debut at the season-ending championship, a milestone achievement for the young player.
Expressing his disappointment on social media, Djokovic wrote, “I was really looking forward to competing in Turin and giving it my all, but after today’s final in Athens, I’m sad to announce that I need to withdraw due to an ongoing shoulder injury. I’m truly sorry to the fans who were hoping to see me play—your support means so much. I wish all the players an amazing tournament, and I can’t wait to be back on the court with you all soon!”
