Novak Djokovic is stepping up his preparations for the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, and recent surgery seems to have not hampered his progress at all.
After having another legendary season in 2023, the experienced Serbian failed to reach a final on the ATP Tour in the first six months of the 2024 season, and he will try to change that at the upcoming Wimbledon Championships.
However, during his most recent major appearance at Roland Garros, Djokovic suffered a knee injury in his match against Francisco Cerundolo. As a result, he immediately underwent knee surgery, and while the timeline initially didn’t look promising, it seems more and more probable that the 37-year-old will make it in time for the season’s third major.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion traveled to London, and the first news from his practice was already positive, as he beat Federico Coria in a set of play. However, it’s important to note that the Argentinian player has never won a match on grass in his career and that the match was played in low intensity.
But neither of those ‘buts’ could be applied to his following practice. Djokovic played against Frances Tiafoe, who is a good grass-court player, as his game suits the surface, and the practice match was played in a much higher intensity.
Once again, as many matches on grass courts do, the practice match was decided in a tie-break. The seven-time Wimbledon champion was again the better player in the tie-break, winning it 7-5 to bag another confidence-boosting practice match victory.
It’s increasingly starting to seem that Djokovic will not only be ready to compete at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships from July 1st to 14th, but also that he could be able to challenge for the title, given his incredible track record on the grass-court at SW19.
