Novak Djokovic became just the second man in the Open Era to win three Grand Slams and the ATP Finals in the same season on at least two occasions.
By doing so, he matched his longtime rival and retired Swiss great Roger Federer who won three majors and the year-end championships during his most dominant stint at the summit of men’s tennis in the 2006 and 2007 seasons. That streak stood for at least 15 years.
Djokovic first achieved this feat back in 2015 when he won the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open at Grand Slam level. He finished the year by winning the ATP Finals. Djokovic defeated Federer in three big finals that season, including at season finale in London.
While Djokovic has won three majors in one season at least three times in the past, it was not until this season that he eventually complimented that monstrous run with the ATP Finals title. Having bagged the Australian Open for a record 10th time, Djokovic won Roland Garros in June.
He became the first man to win each of four Grand Slams at least three times (the career Grand Slam). Djokovic then added his 24th major at the US Open, tying Margaret Court’s all-time record. Djokovic continued to smash every record during his next stop on indoor hard courts.
After winning a 40th Masters title in Paris-Bercy, he sensationally went on to lift the ATP Finals for a record seventh time in Turin. Djokovic has now equaled Federer’s own Open Era record of winning three Slams and the ATP Finals in multiple seasons.
It would have been quite the story had Djokovic gone on to win the Davis Cup for Serbia this past week, where he heroically took them to the semifinals but missed out on the prize after losing to a Jannik Sinner-led Italian team in Malaga.
