Djokovic Reflects on Pride and Honor of Fifth Laureus Sportsman Of The Year Award Win

Novak Djokovic picked up yet another award thanks to his banner 2023 season, in which he cemented his status as the greatest tennis player of all time.

Djokovic’s record-setting year yielded seven titles, which was the most by a player across both tours last season. Of the seven, the Serbian hoisted three Grand Slams, and he was only prevented from completing a Calendar Grand Slam by an inspired Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final.

The 36-year-old became the first man to win three of the four Grand Slams in a single season on four occasions (2011, 2015, 2021, and 2023). He also shattered the previous record for the most majors by a male player when he won his third Roland Garros last June.

It was not surprising that he was nominated for the Laureus Sportsman of the Year award for the umpteenth time. He was also one of four payers who were featured on the shortlists for the different award categories during the night in Madrid.

Djokovic beat a decorated list of elite athletes, including F1 World Champion Max Versatapen, Manchester City’s treble winner Erling Haaland, and Argentina football superstar Lionel Messi to win a record-equalling fifth crown.

Speaking during the ceremony, Djokovic could not conceal his delight at winning this prestigious award 12 years after winning his first at the age of 24.

“I am incredibly honoured to have won my fifth Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award. I think back to 2012, when I won it for the first time as a 24-year-old. I am very proud to be here 12 years later, reflecting on a year that brought me and my fans a lot of excitement and success.”

Even though he was solely responsible for winning all the matches and the trophies on the court, Djokovic credited his family and his team for being the backbone of his success. He received the trophy from legendary American quarterback Tom Brady, who is close friends with the tennis world No. 1.

“It is unreal that you are handing me this award. You are my sports hero and friend. Someone I look up to not only in sports but also in life.”

The 24-time Grand Slam champion withdrew from this week’s Madrid Open. He has not given any details regarding his absence, but he is expected to return in time for the Italian Open next month.
