The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays have reached an agreement for a trade on Wednesday.
This could also be a showing of intentions: the Dodgers will obviously be buyers at the deadline, but the 33-34 Blue Jays could be open to selling other pieces in case they get solid offers.
This is not to say they will be sellers, but they could be more open to the possibility if they hit a rough stretch ahead of the deadline.
For now, they didn’t part with a major piece, but Cavan Biggio could be helpful to the Dodgers.
“The Los Angeles Dodgers are acquiring superutilityman Cavan Biggio in a trade from the Toronto Blue Jays, sources tell ESPN. Biggio, 29, was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays last week. He’s hitting .200/.323/.291 this year and .227/.343/.382 for his career,” MLB insider Jeff Passan reported via Twitter.
If there is a team in baseball that can work with Biggio and help him regain some of his 2019 (.793 OPS) and 2020 (.807 OPS) form, it’s the Dodgers.
In exchange, the Blue Jays have received right-handed reliever Braydon Fisher.
Per Passan, he has spent time between AA and AAA this year and boasts a 5.68 ERA, 30 strikeouts, and 15 walks in 19 innings.
Biggio is a career .227/.343/.382 hitter with a .725 OPS.
His best attribute is an ability to draw walks, but he also has some modest power, speed, and defensive versatility.
If anything, it’s a low-risk gamble by the Dodgers.
