Carlos Alcaraz has once again showcased his extraordinary talent, clinching the Qatar ExxonMobil Open title with a commanding performance that lasted just 50 minutes. This victory marks the 26th title of his illustrious career and solidifies his status as the world’s top tennis player.
After securing a quick 6-2, 6-1 win against Arthur Fils in the final, Alcaraz expressed his joy at the achievement. “I’m just playing great tennis and I’m really happy about this week. This trophy means a lot to me,” he stated, reflecting on his successful outing in Doha.
The 22-year-old demonstrated remarkable skill and focus, leaving Fils visibly frustrated, especially after the latter broke his racket in disappointment when he fell behind 3-0 in the second set. Alcaraz’s dominant performance comes just three weeks after he claimed the Australian Open title, making him the youngest player in history to complete a Career Grand Slam.
“I came this year hungry for more,” Alcaraz remarked, alluding to his unbeaten record this season and his current 12-match winning streak. “I think after every tournament, we just have to set new goals. I’m really proud of everything I have done with my team, both on and off the court. It’s been a strong start to the year. It wasn’t easy; I had to be mentally strong.”
Alcaraz had a point to prove in Doha after his quarterfinal exit the previous year, and he certainly lived up to expectations. His journey to the final included challenging matches, but he opened the final with impressive aggression and never allowed Fils, who has recently returned from an eight-month injury hiatus, to find his rhythm.
On the other side of the court, Fils attempted to adjust his strategy to keep up with Alcaraz’s speed and shot placement. The 21-year-old, fresh off a successful return to the tour—with a quarterfinal appearance at the Montpellier Open—had defeated notable opponents, including Jiri Lehecka, leading up to the final.
“It’s been eight long months with my injury, so in a time like this, you just have to think about the last eight months when I was struggling,” Fils reflected after the match. “I just want to thank my team… Today was not the day, but I think we did a hell of a job.”
With this win, Alcaraz captures his ninth ATP Tour 500 level title, equaling the legacy of Andy Murray in that category. They now rank fourth in the all-time list, which is topped by legends Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer.
As Alcaraz continues to rewrite the record books, there is growing anticipation for what he will accomplish in the future, further establishing his place among tennis greats.
