Doha Update: Swiatek and Rybakina Shine as Top Seeds Exit WTA 1000 Qatar Open

The Qatar TotalEnergies Open kicked off with a day of surprises as top seeds Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina advanced smoothly, while several higher-ranked players faced shocking defeats. Among those eliminated were Coco Gauff, Jasmine Paolini, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Linda Noskova, Emma Navarro, and Elise Mertens. In contrast, players like Elisabetta Cocciaretto, Maria Sakkari, Jelena Ostapenko, Varvara Gracheva, Anna Kalinskaya, and Daria Kasatkina celebrated significant victories.

Iga Swiatek, the world number one and three-time champion in Doha, showcased her dominance, dispatching Indonesian wild-card Janice Tjen with a convincing score of 6-0, 6-3. This match, lasting just 69 minutes, displayed her refined skills as she continued her journey in this cherished tournament. Swiatek noted the warm support from fans and spoke fondly of her affection for Doha, emphasizing the unique atmosphere that motivates her.

“Today, I needed to adjust to a different rhythm,” Swiatek reflected after her win. “Her choices are reminiscent of Ash Barty’s style, which brought back some good memories. I aimed for my shots and felt prepared going into the match.”

Swiatek’s performance was impressive, winning 71% of her first-serve points and converting 5 of her 9 break-point opportunities. Although Tjen managed to break Swiatek’s serve early in the second set, the top seed quickly regained control and closed out the match with an ace—a signature finish.

Next on Swiatek’s agenda is a clash with Daria Kasatkina, who advanced by defeating Elise Mertens with a 6-4, 6-0 scoreline, marking a much-needed win for the Russian player against a top 30 opponent.

Elena Rybakina, seeded second, celebrated her 400th WTA career match win with a straightforward 6-2, 6-4 victory against Wang Xinyu. Rybakina rebounded after falling behind in the second set, winning the final four games to secure her progression to the third round for the third consecutive year in Doha. Grateful for her continued success, Rybakina expressed her joy at being able to compete at a high level.

“I’m just happy to be out there playing and enjoying every moment,” said Rybakina post-match.

In a notable upset, Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who received entry into the main draw as a lucky loser, bested fourth seed Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-2. This victory marked Cocciaretto’s third win over a Top 10 player, previously having only beaten top-ranked opponents in Grand Slams. With her attention partially on the Winter Olympics happening in her home country, Cocciaretto noted the unusual blend of motivations fueling her recent performances.

“Maybe that was the key to my success—being more relaxed and focusing on supporting our athletes,” Cocciaretto shared after her win. “Playing matches helps, and I’m thrilled with how I’ve been competing this week.”

In other matches, Maria Sakkari cruised past sixth-seeded Jasmine Paolini, scoring her first Top 10 victory in nearly nine months. Jelena Ostapenko also made headlines by eliminating eighth seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, while Varvara Gracheva produced a comeback win over ninth seed Linda Noskova.

As the tournament progresses, the remaining players face daunting challenges ahead, with a blend of up-and-coming talents and seasoned veterans proving their mettle in this prestigious WTA 1000 event. With such a volatile day behind them, anticipation builds for the ensuing rounds.
