GAINESVILLE, Va. – It’s been nine years since the biggest comeback in Solheim Cup history, when Suzann Pettersen led Team USA to victory with a controversial move at St. Leon-Rot Golf Club in Germany. Now, Pettersen will try to do the same with Team Europe, who trails 10-6 going into the final day at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club.
“If there’s a hope, there’s always a chance,” said Pettersen. The Americans won the final five matches to complete the upset in 2015, with Paula Creamer securing the winning point. All the main characters from that day are on the grounds in Virginia, including Creamer and teammates Alison Lee and Brittany Lincicome.
On the other side, Team USA has three players with a 3-0-0 record so far: Nelly Korda, Rose Zhang, and Lauren Coughlin. Zhang and Andrea Lee have been formidable in fourball play, never playing past the 14th hole. Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz made history with a fourth consecutive foursomes match win on Friday.
Not all players have been as successful, however. Leona Maguire, who had never missed a session in two previous appearances, sat out the first two days of competition. Ally Ewing continues to struggle, losing her sixth consecutive match on Saturday afternoon.
As the teams head into Sunday singles, anything can happen in the Solheim Cup.
