After days of speculation, Dominic Thiem has finally confirmed that the 2024 ATP season will be the last of his professional career.
On Wednesday, reputable sources from Austria broke the news of Thiem’s retirement at the end of the regular season and that his final tournament will be the Vienna Open, which will give him a perfect sendoff in front of his home fans.
Thiem has now officially confirmed the news in a video he shared on Instagram with his 1.3 million followers. Since recovering from a wrist injury he suffered at the Mallorca Open in 2021, the 30-year-old has struggled to replicate the form that took him to a career-high ranking of World No. 3.
Thiem cited the wrist injury as one of the primary drivers behind his decision to hang up his racket for good and had been thinking about the decision “carefully” for a considerable period.
“Hello everybody, I have to tell you a very important, very sad, but also very beautiful message. The season 2024 will be my last one. I am gonna finish my career at the end of the season.”
“There are some reasons behind it: firstly, of course, my wrist. It is not exactly the way it should be and its not exactly how I want it. The second reason is my inner feeling: I have been thinking about this decision for a very long time.”
Thiem has no regrets about the ups and downs he experienced during his 13-year playing career. He strongly believes he made the right decision and has promised a “vlog” that will be released on Saturday, presumably to document his glorious moments on the court.
The Austrian will end his career as a Grand Slam champion, having won the 2020 US Open (17 career titles). He was also a two-time runner-up at Roland Garros and won over $30 million in career prize money (ranking him 20th in the all-time list).
