Donovan Pines Named Americans Abroad Player of the Week

Americans Abroad Player of the Week: Donovan Pines

A healthy and in-form Donovan Pines has certainly provided an early season boost for League One side Barnsley.

Pines made back-to-back starts over the past four days as Barnsley picked up victories in two separate competitions. The former DC United defender logged 90 minutes midweek as Barnsley defeated Sheffield United 1-0 in EFL Cup play before Pines scored the opening goal Saturday in a 3-0 league victory over Crawley Town.

After missing the final weeks of last season through injury, Pines is back and flying high in Darrell Clarke’s squad. He’s scored two goals in five appearances to date and has helped Barnsley to a 4-1-0 record during that span.

Pines, alongside international teammate Gabriel Slonina, have played important roles so far this season and will be eager to continue their winning run this month.

Barnsley will host Bristol Rovers on September 7 as League One play continues through the international break.

Here is a look at some of the other top Americans Abroad performers from this past week:

Antonee Robinson

For the second-consecutive week, Antonee Robinson etched his name onto the stat-sheet for Fulham.

Robinson assisted once in the Cottagers’ 1-1 road draw with Ipswich Town at Portman Road. The U.S. men’s national team left back set up Adama Traore with a great cross into the box, giving Marco Silva’s squad a share of the spoils.

Robinson also won seven duels, drew one foul, and made three defensive clearances.

Christian Pulisic

Christian Pulisic’s pinpoint service helped AC Milan walk away with one point from Saturday’s trip to Rome.

Pulisic’s dangerous corner kick in the eighth minute allowed Strahinja Pavlovic to head home AC Milan’s opening goal. The two sides would fight back and forth for an eventual 2-2 draw but Pulisic once again walked away as one of the more impactful performers.

He now heads into likely international duty

Jonathan Amon

Lyngby snapped a three-match winless run on Friday with Jonathan Amon playing the hero for the Danish side.

Amon scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Vejle, giving Lyngby a crucial three points at home. The former USMNT winger has remained an important player for the club and a second goal of the season should give him major confidence heading forward this September.

Rokas Pukstas

Hajduk Split picked up a statement win on Saturday with Rokas Pukstas contributing majorly to the result.

Pukstas assisted on the winning goal from Marko Livaja in a 1-0 victory over Osijek. The USMNT midfielder’s lay off pass allowed Livaja to slot home for three points.

Pukstas remains a top prospect for the USMNT heading into 2025.

What did you think of these individual performances this past weekend? Was there anyone left off the list that you would’ve added?
