Draper Makes Promising Comeback in Dubai

In a triumphant return to competitive tennis, Jack Draper showcased his skills at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after an extended hiatus of eight months due to injury. The British No. 1, who had recently seen his world ranking dip from a high of No. 4 to No. 15 as a result of a shoulder injury sustained during Wimbledon, marked his comeback with a spirited performance. Draper, seeded fourth in the tournament, faced off against late qualifier Quentin Halys, ultimately clinching the match with a score of 7-6(8), 6-3.

Draper, sporting a fresh crew cut and a sleeveless top, expressed his joy about being back on the court. “I’ve been craving the feeling of competing for a very long time,” he reflected in his post-match interview. He credited the support he received during his recovery, stating, “A lot of people have helped me to get back to this position after a lot of down moments. It’s not been easy to be back here, and that’s something I can be really proud of. Long may it continue.”

Draper’s journey back to the tour was not without its challenges. He had initially struggled with a bruised bone in his serving arm during last year’s clay court season, which ultimately led to him needing to cut his season short following the US Open. However, in his comeback match, he appeared physically fit and mentally composed, saving a set point at 4-5 in the first set before powering through a tense tiebreaker. Once Draper secured his first break of serve early in the second set, he maintained control of the match, hitting an impressive 24 winners, with 19 coming from his forehand.

In other matches during the opening round of the tournament, former champion Stan Wawrinka displayed his formidable skills by defeating Benjamin Hassan 7-5, 6-3, securing his sixth consecutive first-round victory and setting up a clash with third seed Daniil Medvedev, who dispatched Shang Juncheng 6-1, 6-3.

Felix Auger-Aliassime, the tournament’s top seed, had a challenging start against China’s Zhang Zhizhen. Despite being pushed to the limit, he prevailed with a scoreline of 6-3, 7-6(4), after needing six match points to seal the win. For Auger-Aliassime, who reached the finals in Dubai last year before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas, this match served as a reminder of the mental hurdles one faces during high-pressure situations. “It was getting too frustrating,” he admitted, reflecting on his challenges in clutch moments. He will next take on Giovanni Mpetshi Prricard, who earned his spot by defeating wild card Moez Echargui.

In a surprising turn, last year’s champion Stefanos Tsitsipas fell to France’s Ugo Humbert 6-4, 7-5 in a competitive match. Humbert managed to break Tsitsipas’ serve crucially in both sets and will move on to face Andrey Rublev, who overcame Valentin Royer.

Additionally, Alexander Bublik and Karen Khachanov navigated through the first round with successful outings against Jan-Lennard Struff and Aleksander Shevchenko, respectively. Bublik’s 6-3, 6-4 victory sets him up against Tallon Griekspoor next, while Khachanov will face Jenson Brooksby after his win over Zizou Bergs.

As the Dubai tournament progresses, fans can look forward to exciting matchups and further displays of resilience from returning players like Draper, who are eager to reclaim their places in the competitive landscape of tennis.
