Dubai | Pegula Set to Face Svitolina in WTA 1000 Championship Clash

The WTA 1000 Dubai Duty Free Championships has set the stage for an exciting conclusion as Jessica Pegula, the fourth seed, and Elina Svitolina, the seventh seed, prepare to vie for the title. Both players showcased their resilience in the semi-finals, emerging victorious from back-and-forth battles on Friday.

Jessica Pegula staged a remarkable comeback against second-seeded Amanda Anisimova, who initially dominated the match. After dropping the first set 1-6, Pegula found herself down 3-1 in the second set, but she rebounded to win 6-4, 6-3 in a match that lasted 2 hours and 2 minutes. This victory improved Pegula’s head-to-head record against Anisimova to an impressive 5-0.

Following Pegula’s match, Svitolina faced third-seeded Coco Gauff in a gripping semi-final that ran for 3 hours and 3 minutes. Svitolina ultimately triumphed with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-7(13), 6-4, sealing her place in the final for the first time since her consecutive wins in 2017 and 2018.

In her post-match remarks, Svitolina expressed the emotional weight of her victory. “Speechless after that fight,” she said. “I was really trying to put myself out there, playing like there is no tomorrow and put in all the effort. Thank you so much for all your support. It’s special to be in the final again here after a few years.”

Pegula also acknowledged the challenge posed by Svitolina, emphasizing the intensity of their encounters. “It’s a really tough matchup. We battle every single time,” she noted.

Anisimova, who was in commanding form earlier in the tournament, had claimed a thrilling victory over defending champion Mirra Andreeva in the quarter-finals, coming back from a set down to win 2-6, 7-5, 7-6(4).

Despite her consistent performance on the court, including seven consecutive semi-final appearances in her last events, Pegula is eager to capture her first title of the 2023 season and the tenth of her career. “Since last summer, I’ve been working on a lot of things,” Pegula reflected. “I felt like I had a couple of losses that I wasn’t playing well in before. I knew that if I could come out of that, I would become a better player.”

Meanwhile, Svitolina has shown powerful determination throughout the tournament, claiming her 25th career victory against a top-five ranked player with her win over Gauff. After the match, a visibly exhausted Gauff revealed her frustrations, stating, “It’s tough to be on the losing end of a match like this. Elina played great, I thought I played great, and it came down to the wire.”

As the final approaches, Svitolina must rise physically and mentally after her grueling semi-final. “We’ll do everything possible. Physios are here trying to help me speed up the recovery,” she said.

The stakes will be high on match day, as Pegula and Svitolina prepare for what promises to be a thrilling final, with a title on the line and both players hungry for success.
