ECCO Strikes Gold Once More: A Review of the Exceptional BIOM TOUR Golf Shoe

'ECCO nail it again' - A roadtest of the wonderful BIOM TOUR shoe

Ecco Biom Review

Released towards the end of 2023, the ECCO BIOM TOUR shoe has already become a favourite of golfers – and it’s easy to see why.

The shoes slip easily onto your feet, the fit is snug, the luxurious leather is waterproof and the connection to the ground feels sensational.

Add in a smart-yet-casual look and ECCO have nailed it once again.

Let’s dig a little deeper into the back story of the shoe and also our response to testing it.

The science

ECCO is a Danish company, and while the marketing spiel comes in English, there is a slight sense that you need to translate it.

What does BIOM mean, for example? Is it a word or an acronym?

In fact, it simply refers to the manufacturer’s sense that it is essential to create a shoe with the natural motion of the foot at the forefront of their ideas – they call it BIOM natural motion technology.

It makes for a shoe that is noticeably closer to the fairways and green than other shoes. ECCO explains that “low-to-the-ground construction and stability provides forward momentum and power during every swing and step around the course”.

Further to that, ECCO’s FLUIDFORM Direct Comfort Technology proves two things.

One, they really do like the CAPS LOCK button.

And two, there is a clearly enhanced feel thanks to liquid-injected, moulded foam midsoles that generate a snug fit and permit that close-to-the-ground feature.

The eight Pivix spikes are backed up with extra grooves on the sole that are a little reminiscent of the old blade football boots.

A waterproof membrane on the distinctive ECCO leather produces a fantastic look and wonderful feel.

There is also a removable and washable Ortholite insole that provides long-term cushioning.

Testing

It’s easy to be blasé about a golf shoe.

My last pair were an emergency purchase and I’ve regretted the decision ever since. The look irritates me, the feel is not great – my game is quite clearly hampered by them.

My ECCOs joined me on a double-headed mission.

It started with the final two days of the Amateur Championship, walking the testing fairways and dunes of Ballyliffin. The first day was wet (but my feet were dry); the second day stunning, with significant dune bashing required (the grip was superb).

The test was a tough one and ECCO’s notions of echoing the natural movement of the foot was immediately apparent. I felt connected to the ground and the soft, light PHORENE sole provided bounce and energy.

Then it was my turn to hit the balls and I remained a fan. My feet felt great throughout all 18 holes, the connection to the ground made me confident over the ball, any hanging lies were a doddle with the superb grip.

No more excuses from me. The old shoes are being thrown to the back of the garage.

The ECCO BIOM TOUR is fully deserving of the caps lock.

THEY’RE VERY GOOD.
