EFL rejects Duncan McGuire’s proposed loan move to Blackburn Rovers

EFL rejects Duncan McGuire’s proposed loan move to Blackburn Rovers

Duncan McGuire is not headed to the English Football League Championship. At least not until the summer.

The EFL has rejected Blackburn Rovers’ application to register McGuire on loan for the remainder of the current league season. Blackburn originally thought it had secured the loan signing of McGuire from Orlando City on February 1, but the EFL announced Tuesday that the registration documents were submitted after the 11 p.m. transfer deadline.

Blackburn Rovers announced it did not click to submit the application to the EFL until after the closure of the window as a result of human error but argued that all relevant details had been agreed, signed and uploaded onto the system in advance of 11 p.m.

“As was previously communicated by the club, Rovers will fly over to the United States over the coming weeks to try to conclude a pre-contract agreement with Orlando City, so that the 23-year forward can officially become a Rovers player in the summer,” the club announced Thursday.

“Rovers wish to sincerely thank Duncan McGuire and the player’s representative, as well as Orlando City and the supporters of both clubs, for their patience and understanding in this matter, which will hopefully reach a positive conclusion in due course,” the statement added.

McGuire, a former Mac Hermann award winner at Creighton University, scored 15 goals for Orlando City last season. His stellar rookie campaign in MLS led to his first U.S. men’s national team call-up and debut in January’s 1-0 friendly loss to Slovenia.

Orlando City opens its 2024 schedule on February 21 against Canadian side Calvary FC in the revamped CONCACAF Champions Cup.
