Trinity Rodman’s Injury Dampens Spirit’s Victory
During the first half of the Washington Spirit’s convincing 4-0 win against Monterrey in the Concacaf W Champions Cup group stage, Trinity Rodman suffered a troubling knee injury that forced her to leave the field in distress.
Rodman fell after attempting a tackle along the sideline and was promptly assisted by athletic trainers. She struggled to put weight on her right leg, leading to her being helped off the field. She was replaced in the 41st minute by Brittany Ratcliffe and was later seen using crutches while heading to the locker room at halftime.
Post-match observations revealed Rodman was in a knee brace and still using crutches. The Spirit’s coach, Adrián González, stated that Rodman would undergo scans the following day, but did not provide any updates on her condition.
This victory secured the Spirit’s place at the top of Group B, ensuring their advancement to the semifinals of the Champions Cup.
Rodman had recently faced multiple setbacks due to a back injury and had limited appearance for the U.S. women’s national team since their gold medal win at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Earlier in the day, she had been named back to the USWNT roster for the first time since April.
Emma Hayes, head coach of the U.S. team, expressed her enthusiasm regarding Rodman’s return after her extended absence due to back issues. Since rejoining the Spirit, the 23-year-old forward had netted seven goals in 13 matches.
“I’m thrilled to have Trin back — but what’s essential is a healthy Trin,” Hayes remarked. She discussed how Rodman seemed ready for competitive play in April, but faced unforeseen challenges following that match in Los Angeles.
“She’s one of the best players in the world, and we’ve had to manage without her for over a year,” Hayes added.
The U.S. women’s team is scheduled to face Portugal on October 23 in Chester, Pennsylvania, followed by another matchup on October 26 in East Hartford, Connecticut.
