Erik ten Hag contemplates activating Alvaro Carreras’ buyback clause – Latest updates from Manchester United’s transfer market

Erik ten Hag says “the process is perfect” in regard to the sale of Alvaro Fernandez Carreras.

Speaking in the embargoed section of the press conference ahead of tomorrow’s match against Brentford, the manager was asked if, given the problems at left back, he regretted selling the young Spaniard to Benfica.

“The process is perfect,” he responded.

“We loaned him to Preston, got him back. We loaned him to Granada, but he didn’t play so much there.

“Of course, we observed him all the time, but now we had the opportunity to sell him, but we have a buyback so we have controlled the situation.

“But I think that’s what he needed, from Preston, then he goes to La Liga, then the next step to Portugal, every time stepping up to a higher club and a better league.

“We have to see and assess the situation, if he maybe can be an option for us.

“But playing at Manchester United is not so easy. Playing in the Premier League for Manchester United is not easy.

“You need experience, and you also need development.”

Ten Hag was also asked whether he regretted selling Scott McTominay, who is performing at a high level at Napoli.

“No I’m very happy for Scott,” he said.

“As I said, when he left, I didn’t want this. But it is the rules. The club had to deal with the fair play rules.

“The rules are not great, I would even say, the rules are bad, but this is a situation created by the rules. It forced us to make this decision.”
