England’s Performance against Iceland Branded as ‘Flat and Disjointed’ by Matthew Upson
The Three Lions suffered a 1-0 defeat to Iceland in their final warm-up match before Euro 2024, with a 12th-minute Jon Thorsteinsson goal proving to be the difference at Wembley.
Gareth Southgate’s side struggled to create chances, mustering just one shot on target compared to Iceland’s four, raising concerns about their form heading into the tournament in Germany.
Former England defender Matthew Upson, who played in the 2010 World Cup, did not hold back in his criticism of the team’s performance.
“What a tough watch that was,” Upson said on BBC Radio 5 Live. “It’s not pleasant going into a major tournament.
“Even if they didn’t play well or had an off night, what was delivered there was really flat and disjointed. It lacked character. So flat from England.”
‘Dismal and Boring’ England Leave Fans Worried
With the Euro 2024 opener against Serbia looming just nine days away, it’s understandable that some players may have been cautious to avoid injuries during the friendly.
However, the lacklustre display against a team ranked 72nd in the world has left fans concerned, as England struggled to create clear-cut opportunities.
“We had no width, no directness or aggression in the play,” Upson added. “It was quite dismal and boring to watch.”
