Despite being widely recognized as one of the best defenders in modern basketball, Bam Adebayo has yet to receive the ultimate praise from the NBA: Defensive Player of the Year. Former All-Star Caron Butler recently criticized this oversight, calling it a “crime” that Adebayo has not been honored with the prestigious award after consistently strong performances over seven seasons in the league. It’s worth noting that Butler currently serves as an assistant coach for the Miami Heat.
“When you talk about versatility, when you talk about a two-way defender, I mean, it’s a crime that he hasn’t won Defensive Player of the Year,” Butler expressed, acknowledging Adebayo’s five consecutive selections to the All-Defensive Team.

Although Adebayo’s defensive statistics may not rival those of current Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert or rookie standout Victor Wembanyama, Butler argues that Adebayo’s impact transcends mere numbers.
“With just the observation of the eye test, I know statistically you can look at a lot of things, but when you come to games and you see what he does,” the ex-NBA player remarked. “How hard individuals have to work and how many calories are burned to get a shot off on Bam. Nothing comes easy.”
Recently, Shaquille O’Neal identified Rudy Gobert as the “worst NBA player of all time” during a podcast show, underscoring the ongoing debate around defensive accolades in the league.
Despite his reputation as one of the premier defenders in the NBA, Anthony Davis has never been named Defensive Player of the Year, a fact that he finds perplexing. In a recent interview, the Lakers star expressed frustration at not being included in the award conversation, hinting at personal biases influencing the selection process.
Rudy Gobert Makes History with Fourth Defensive Player of the Year Award
Rudy Gobert solidified his status as one of the all-time great defenders in the NBA by capturing his fourth Defensive Player of the Year award, joining an elite group of players such as Ben Wallace and Dikembe Mutombo. The Minnesota center’s latest achievement coincides with his team’s playoff run in the Western Conference semifinals.
“It’s a blessing and an honor to join this small group,” Gobert remarked upon receiving the award. “These two guys are legends. Every story is unique. I will keep writing mine and try to be the best version of myself every day and enjoy every step of the way.”
When asked about Gobert’s historic feat, compatriot Victor Wembanyama hinted at a shifting of the guard in the realm of elite defenders, signaling a new era in NBA defense.
