Marcelo Flores Explores Training Opportunity with Canadian National Team

Mexico international Marcelo Flores is in the process of finalizing arrangements to join a training camp with the Canada national soccer team as an unofficial call-up for upcoming friendlies, according to sources.

Reports suggest that it is highly likely Flores, who has Canadian roots, will participate primarily to acclimatize himself to the environment and the team’s vision. The Canadian federation has reportedly made a significant effort to ensure he feels appreciated and welcomed.

At 22 years old, Flores previously found himself in a dilemma between representing Mexico and Canada before making his senior team debut for El Tri in 2021. He has since made three appearances for Mexico, although he has not played for the senior national squad since 2022.

Should he choose to officially switch allegiances to Canada in the future, a one-time change of association would be necessary. Sources indicate there has been extensive communication between Flores and the Canadian soccer federation.

On November 13, Canada will play against Ecuador in Toronto, followed by a match against Venezuela on November 18 in Fort Lauderdale.

A product of the Arsenal academy, Flores spent time on loan with Real Oviedo in 2022 before joining Tigres in Liga MX in 2023.

This isn’t the first instance where Flores has navigated decisions regarding his international career. In May 2022, after contemplating a commitment to either Canada or Mexico, he announced on social media that he would represent El Tri “wholeheartedly for the rest of my professional life.”
