Every single year during the NFL offseason and sometimes throughout training camp, some of the league’s best quarterbacks go through contract negotiations, as each top-tier quarterback wants to be the highest-paid at his position, which sets the bar higher and higher each year for the leaders under center.
Over the past few weeks, the one elite quarterback who was thought to be the next in line to get a new deal with his team was Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins, as he has proven his worth and is arguably in the running to reset the quarterback market when he signs on the dotted line.
However, Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars seems to have jumped the line ahead of Tagovailoa, which is likely good news for the Dolphins superstar.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Lawrence has agreed to a five-year contract extension with the Jaguars worth $275 million, where he’ll earn $200 million guaranteed and $142 million guaranteed at signing.
With Lawrence set to make $55 million per season as part of this deal, he’ll tie fellow superstar quarterback Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals for the distinction of the highest annual salary.
Although Lawrence struggled right out of the gate after the Jaguars drafted him No. 1 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, finishing with a 3-14 record and more interceptions (17) than touchdowns (12), the former Clemson star has been able to turn things around and get Jacksonville in playoff contention the last two years.
Despite missing the playoffs last year, the Jaguars are still considered to be a team on the rise in the NFL, with a bright future ahead now that Lawrence has secured this new deal.
