The Seattle Seahawks are in the midst of a sea of change in 2024, which starts with new head coach Mike Macdonald. And the new head man, who replaced Pete Carroll and his 14 years on the sideline, brought with him new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb.
The man who will lead the Seahawks offense spent two very successful years in the same role with the Washington Huskies, and his resume impressed one long-time NFL observer. Analyst Greg Cosell told Ross Tucker, “Ryan Grubb for college football did a great job with intermediate and vertical route concepts…Geno Smith can make those throws.”

According to Cosell, Grubb was “really, really good” at designing pass plays that should translate well to the Seahawks. He noted that the “air raid” concepts dominate much of the offensive landscape, but Grubb specialized in the vertical game with the Huskies.
And not only can Smith complete those passes, he has standout targets such as D.K. Metcalf who can haul them in for big chunks of yardage. Grubb will depend on Smith, who the team has handed the reins to at least for the 2024 campaign.
The former New York Jet has put up solid numbers in his two years under center in Seattle, and he has the second-highest-paid receiving corps in the NFL to throw passes to.
Grubb definitely has the pieces to make a vertical system work, and this could mean the return of exciting football to a city that adores its NFL franchise. This change cannot come too soon for a team that has won only one playoff game since 2016.
