Exploring the Golf Scene in St. Moritz, Switzerland: A Travel Feature

TRAVEL FEATURE: ST. MORTIZ SWITZERLAND - Golf News

St. Moritz’s transformation from a quiet agricultural village to a premier winter resort began in the mid-19th century. Previously known for its mild summers, St. Moritz’s transformation was triggered by a bet made by Johannes Badrutt, owner of the Kulm Hotel, in 1864.

When Badrutt challenged a group of English summer guests to stay through the winter, promising to cover their expenses if they found it unpleasant, four guests accepted. They were charmed by the sunny, crisp conditions and stunning snowy landscapes, leading them to return year after year. This enthusiasm attracted more visitors, establishing St. Moritz as a top winter destination.

ST. MORITZ HOSTED THE OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES IN 1948

Before becoming a mecca for winter sports, St Moritz was revered as a health retreat dating back to the Bronze Age. Archaeological evidence found at the Engadine Museum shows people travelled to St Moritz over 3,000 years ago to drink and bathe in its mineral-rich springs.

The spring’s carbonic acid-rich waters stimulate circulation when absorbed through the skin, making St. Moritz a prominent health destination by 1859. However, post-World War I, the town shifted focus to winter sports, hosting the Winter Olympics in 1928 and 1948.

KULM GOLF CLUB IS NEXT TO THE FAMOUS CRESTA BOBSLEIGH RUN

St. Moritz’s rise as a world-renowned destination is attributed to its rich history and natural beauty. Legendary sporting events like the Cresta Run and skijoring, along with hosting the Winter Olympics, have solidified its place in winter sports history.

From a humble village to a global hotspot, St. Moritz’s transformation showcases the impact of one historic bet, forever changing the town’s trajectory.
