Tragically, an NBA fan passed away at the Kings’ In-Season Tournament home game against the Pelicans on Monday night.
Sacramento issued a statement during the game to explain what happened and offer their condolences.
“During the first quarter of the Kings vs. Pelicans game, a guest had a medical emergency,” the statement said. “EMS immediately responded and administered CPR. Tragically, these efforts were unsuccessful and the guest passed away. The organization offers its deepest condolences to the guest’s family and loved ones.”
The Sacramento Fire Department told Fox 40 local news, “Golden 1 Center staff was notified that someone was unresponsive. When the engine got there they found a 30’s aged male.”
According to the Sacramento outlet, CPR was administered for about 20 minutes before the man was pronounced dead at the Golden 1 Center by medical services.
The incident didn’t delay the game in any way and the Pelicans and Kings players only learned of the tragedy after the game was over.
Sacramento forward Keegan Murray confirmed this to reporters after the game, explaining the team wasn’t aware of the situation “at all.”
“As a team, we give our condolences,” Murray said. “Hopefully, the family is being taken care of.”
The man’s death was made public in the fourth quarter of the game, which the home team lost 127-117.
At the time of writing, no additional details surrounding the fan’s death have been made public.
The loss marked the King’s elimination from the inaugural In-Season Tournament, so their next game game will be against the loser of the Lakers and Suns Western Conference quarterfinal matchup.
