The Jacksonville Jaguars made a firm commitment to Trevor Lawrence to be their franchise’s quarterback as they signed him to a five-year, $275 million extension.

The new deal ties Lawrence with Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Burrow as the highest-paid player in the league as he will make an average of $55 million per year.

Lawrence also becomes just the fourth quarterback in NFL history to earn $200 million guaranteed on a deal, joining the likes of Deshaun Watson, Justin Herbert, and Burrow.

It seems like a lot of money to hand out to Lawrence who has yet to really break out in the NFL, though it’s a sign of the franchise’s faith in him that he can get to that elite tier of quarterback.

Jacksonville hasn’t been a pass-heavy offense since they drafted Lawrence first overall in the 2021 NFL Draft and fans were shocked to see he had only hit a passing threshold twice in his career.

“Trevor Lawrence passed for over 335 yards in a game just twice in his career.”

Any time a quarterback surpasses 300 yards of passing, it usually means they had a great game but Lawrence has been insulated with a running game and decent defense since coming to the league.

His lack of passing yardage could be a sign of a player that can’t push the ball downfield often but that doesn’t mean he’s a bad signal caller by any stretch.

With new weapons in Gabe Davis and Brian Thomas Jr., though, Lawrence should be able to hit that threshold more often once the 2024 NFL season rolls around.
