The San Francisco 49ers ended their season like 30 other teams in the NFL: in disappointment.
But, the Niners had it worse because they were so close to winning the Super Bowl.
San Francisco held a 10-point lead in the Super Bowl and was looking very good at halftime.
But, the second half took a turn for the worse.
The Kansas City Chiefs offense caught fire, scoring 22 points in the second half and overtime.
While no one individual should take the blame for the 49ers loss, one man did lose his job because of it.
According to Ian Rapoport, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that he fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.

This news is a little shocking after Wilks helped lead this defense to the Super Bowl.
But, throughout the postseason the Niners did not play great on that side of the ball.
They trailed in all three of their playoff games because the defense struggled to keep teams off the scoreboard.
Still, many people are surprised the Niners chose to go this route.
Kept them in the game and gets fired. Tough world

Facing Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs is no easy task.
But Wilks’ defense held up the best they could.

Wilks had that defense flying around and ballin during the Super Bowl

Wilks had a ton of talent to work with on the Niners defense and some think he could have done more.
He was doing great in the regular season but when it came to the postseason he was doing horrible!

He wasn’t good for most of the season, including the NFC playoffs. Just wasn’t a good fit.

The tough part for Wilks is that every other DC position in the league is filled.
So if he wants to coach in 2024 he must take a lesser role.
