England, one of the most star-studded teams of EURO 2024, has been under scrutiny for their recent performances. Following an unconvincing 1-0 win against Serbia and a disappointing 1-1 draw with Denmark, the Three Lions had the chance to redeem themselves against Slovenia on Tuesday night (June 25). However, they could only manage a goalless draw, leading to criticism from displeased fans.
England’s Struggle Against Slovenia
Despite having talented players like Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham, England has failed to deliver under coach Gareth Southgate. The team has lacked energy and direction, especially in the final third, which was evident in their match against Slovenia.
After a slow start, England thought they had scored through Bukayo Saka, but the goal was disallowed for offside. John Stones came close with a header from a Foden corner in the 58th minute, but the effort was cleared off the line. Declan Rice also had a chance but his shot went wide.
England managed 12 shots with only four on target and had an xG of just 0.8.
Gareth Southgate Calls for Fan Support
Following the disappointing draw, some England fans showed their frustration by booing the team and throwing cups at Southgate. In response, Southgate urged the fans to stand behind the team and criticized the negative atmosphere created by the booing.
Southgate addressed the hostile reception in his post-match press conference, stating:
“I understand the narrative towards me and that’s better for than it being towards them. But it is creating an unusual environment to operate in. I’ve not seen any team qualify and receive similar.
“I recognize that when you have moments at the end of the game, I’m asking the players to be fearless, I’m not going to back down from going over and thanking the fans who were brilliant during the game. They might feel differently towards me. But for me, we only will succeed if we are together. That energy is crucial for the team and it is so important they stay with the team, however they feel towards me.”
Despite their recent struggles, England managed to top their EURO 2024 group comfortably with five points, two points ahead of Denmark.
