FC Cincinnati’s Lucho Acosta named 2023 MLS MVP

FC Cincinnati’s Lucho Acosta named 2023 MLS MVP

There will be a new name inscribed into the MLS MVP award.

FC Cincinnati’s Lucho Acosta was named as the 2023 MVP award winner on Monday after a stellar season for the Eastern Conference club. Acosta’s 31 goal contributions (17 goals, 14 assists) were the most in MLS this season.

Acosta also became just the sixth player in league history to record three or more seasons with at least 10 goals and 10 assists. He is also the 14th player in MLS history to record at least 50 goals and 70 assists in their career.

The 29-year-old’s impactful production helped FC Cincinnati win the Supporters’ Shield in 2023 and also reach this weekend’s Eastern Conference Final. FC Cincy hosts rivals Columbus Crew on Saturday at TQL Stadium.

Acosta became the first FC Cincy player to win the award in the club’s short MLS history. Vela won 60% of the vote for MVP, while second place finalist Denis Bouanga totaled 15%. 2023 MLS Young Player of the Year winner Thiago Almada finished third in the voting.

He now has 60 goals and 80 assists in 227 combined appearances between DC United and FC Cincinnati.

Acosta joins head coach Pat Noonan and defender Matt Miazga as fellow FC Cincy members to win league awards this fall.
