As the 2024/25 NBA season begins, it’s evident that the Boston Celtics are the favored choice to clinch the NBA Championship. The 18-time champions stand out as the frontrunners for a 19th title, and it’s easy to see why: they have maintained their winning roster from last season.
However, repeating as champions is no guarantee. Teams such as the Oklahoma City Thunder, Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets, and New York Knicks are viewed as potential threats to Boston’s pursuit of number 19. The odds reflect this belief among sportsbooks, indicating that these teams could pose challenges. Yet, we feel that some teams may be underestimated by bookmakers. While we’re not claiming they will definitely win the NBA Championship, their odds seem excessively high for teams with legitimate playoff aspirations. Let’s examine five teams that could defy the odds, starting with a real championship contender:
**Minnesota Timberwolves**
Currently listed at +1000 in DraftKings’ NBA odds to win it all, the Timberwolves have made significant offseason moves and had a solid season with 56 wins. Although their playoff run ended disappointingly against the Mavericks in the Western Conference Finals, they arguably benefited from the trade involving Karl-Anthony Towns, acquiring Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo. With Anthony Edwards emerging as a potential MVP, they should be considered serious contenders, and we think their odds could be more favorable.
**Memphis Grizzlies**
After winning 56 games in 2021/22 and 51 in 2022/23, the Grizzlies’ 27 wins in 2023/24 were largely affected by severe injuries. With only two players starting over 40 games last season, important players like Derrick Rose, Marcus Smart, and Ja Morant made just 36 combined starts. If the Grizzlies can stay healthy, their odds of +3000 to win the NBA Championship appear overly high for a team with their potential.
**LA Lakers**
The Lakers’ preferred starting lineup had a 75% win rate last season. While LeBron is nearing 40 and holds the title of the oldest active player in the NBA, he and his teammates still possess the talent to make a significant impact in the 2024/25 season. Defying odds of +4000 to win it all would be a challenging feat, but a deep playoff run is certainly within reach.
**Orlando Magic**
An exciting up-and-coming team, the Magic carry long odds of +6500 to win the NBA Championship. While they may not be ready to compete for a title just yet, their odds are too generous for a team that is clearly improving. With the addition of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, their roster is rich with youthful potential, and stars like Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero may continue to evolve. While it may be premature to discuss championship aspirations, an unexpected breakout season similar to that of the Oklahoma City Thunder isn’t out of the question.
**Cleveland Cavaliers**
Many analysts believe that the Cavaliers are being underestimated this season. While we don’t entirely agree, there’s some rationale behind the notion. With a new head coach, Kenny Atkinson replacing JB Bickerstaff, and several players approaching their prime, the Cavs could surprise in the Eastern Conference. Their odds of +6000 suggest that sportsbooks view a championship as unlikely, but they could emerge as a formidable contender.
