Florida A&M, the reigning champions, commence their title defense in HBCU golf

Defending HBCU golf champions Florida A&M begins title defense

The Florida A&M Rattlers, defending HBCU national champions, are gearing up to start the new season in Rockville, Maryland, at the Howard University/University of San Francisco Intercollegiate.

With a revamped team, FAMU will only have one member from the national championship squad, sophomore Taylor Bell, competing this weekend.

Joining Bell are redshirt freshman Quincy Leonard, transfer Miguel Ilas, and freshmen Sascha Robinson and Emilio Garcia.

Bell played a crucial role in the Rattlers’ 2024 national championship win after finishing fourth in the individual leaderboard at the PGA Works Collegiate Championship. Leonard, a part of the national championship team as a freshman, was redshirted, while Ilas transferred from Alabama State after two seasons with the Hornets.

Alongside FAMU, Howard, Alabama State, and Prairie View A&M, four HBCUs will be competing in the event. The event will also feature teams from George Washington, San Francisco, Binghamton, Princeton, Loyola (Maryland), Towson, George Mason, and Georgetown.

Mike Rice, who became head coach in 2018 after joining the A&M staff as an assistant in 2013, will lead the Rattlers in this season.
