Folarin Balogun celebrates winning start in UEFA Champions League debut

Folarin Balogun enjoys victory in UEFA Champions League debut

Folarin Balogun had a successful debut in the UEFA Champions League, coming off the bench to help AS Monaco secure a surprise victory over Barcelona.

Barcelona was dealt an early blow with Eric Garcia receiving a red card in the 10th minute, giving AS Monaco the advantage at the Stade Louis II. Maghnes Akliouche put the hosts ahead after 16 minutes, but Yamine Lamal equalized for Barcelona before halftime.

In the second half, AS Monaco continued to press forward and eventually found the winner through substitute George Ilenikhena. Balogun was on the pitch for just one minute before Ilenikhena scored the decisive goal for a 2-1 victory.

The U.S. men’s national team forward has primarily been used as a substitute this season, starting only two out of AS Monaco’s four matches so far. However, his impactful performances off the bench could earn him more playing time as the season progresses.

AS Monaco will wrap up its September schedule with consecutive Ligue 1 matches against Le Havre and Montpellier.
