According to former Andy Murray’s coach, Mark Petchey, Emma Raducanu is just ‘too good’ not to return to a high level in tennis.
Petchey used to work with Murray and was a tennis player himself, even though he didn’t enjoy much success on the ATP Tour. At the moment, he works as a tennis pundit, which means he keeps a very close eye on tennis.
Raducanu has been particularly interesting to him as a British pundit, so he has closely watched her ever since she broke out at the US Open. The young Brit came back to the WTA Tour earlier this year after missing much of last year due to triple surgery.
Her comeback was slow, but lately, she’s been showing a very high level, which doesn’t surprise Petchey. As somebody who got the chance to see her up close, it was evident to him that she was too good of a player not to come back to her former level.
“She is way too good not to get back. There are a lot of great players in the women’s game. It won’t be easy for her. Does she want to do it? Yes, of course.”
Returning to grass has been really good for Raducanu, and she’s very motivated. She said recently that her fire was back. Her Eastbourne International campaign ended in a brutal loss to Daria Kasatkina, but the windy conditions were simply too much to overcome.
Wimbledon will be the benchmark to see where she truly stands, and for Petchey, it wouldn’t be surprising to see her win another major in the future.
“I am not going to say she is guaranteed to win another major but I’d be surprised if she didn’t. I would be amazed if in 12 months if she stays fully fit, she is not back in the top 20.”
