Former French Open Semifinalist Anisimova Withdraws From Indian Wells Open

Amanda Anisimova has pulled out of the 2024 Indian Wells Open and will not be competing at the WTA 1000 event next month.

Anisimova was known as one of the USA’s biggest talents as a teenager. She played her first WTA Tour tournament at the 2017 Miami Open when she was just 15 years old.

Those expectations grew even further when Anisimova reached the 2019 French Open final as a 17-year-old. That run included a win against the defending champion at Roland-Garros that year, Simona Halep.

However, the pressures of tennis soon became too much for the American. Anisimova announced she was taking a break from tennis in May last year for her own mental wellbeing.

She returned to tennis at the start of this year. The Grand Slam semifinalist performed very well at the Australian Open, where she progressed to the fourth round, before Anisimova was defeated by the eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka.

Anisimova has not played a match since her strong tennis in Melbourne. It initially seemed like a WTA 1000 event in her home country was the ideal place to return, but Anisimova will not be competing at the tournament.

No official reason has been given for the withdrawal. Anisimova was struggling with a slight injury during some of her matches at the Australian Open, but that did not seem particularly serious at the time.

It is unknown whether that issue has turned out to be worse than originally thought or if there is a separate issue that has led to Anisimova not playing at the WTA 1000 event.

Fellow American Caty McNally replaces Anisimova at the Indian Wells Open. She only recently returned to the WTA Tour less than two weeks ago in Linz after being injured since Wimbledon last year. This gives her a big opportunity on her comeback.
