Former Manchester United player Danny Welbeck requires oxygen following serious injury in Brighton’s match against Newcastle – Latest updates on Manchester United’s news and transfers

Ex-Man United star Danny Welbeck given oxygen after horrific injury during Brighton's clash vs. Newcastle - Man United News And Transfer News

Former Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck had to be given oxygen after sustaining a concerning injury during Brighton & Hove Albion’s clash against Newcastle on Saturday.

Brighton ran out 1-0 winners, with Welbeck getting on the score sheet.

The Englishman fired past goalkeeper Nick Pope after a brilliant exchange with Georginio Rutter in the first half.

However, in the final minutes of the clash, Welbeck fell to the floor after a collision with Newcastle defender Fabian Schar.

The contact between the pair appeared minor but Welbeck seemed to be in agonising pain, prompting the referee to invite the Brighton medical staff to have a closer look at him.

He was tended to for several minutes and was administered gas and air before being taken away on a stretcher.

As Welbeck left the pitch, the ex-United man received a standing ovation from both sets of fans. He was replaced by Jan Paul van Hecke.

After the final whistle, Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler said about the worrying situation, “No updates. I can’t say any updates.”

“I think he got a knee in his lower back. Let’s wait until later, until tomorrow, then we’ll know more.

The Seagulls have since provided an update on Welbeck, indicating that he is doing much better.

The club posted a picture of a smiling Welbeck on the plane, flying back with the rest of his teammates. Brighton’s message read, “Dat guy’s a bit bruised and battered, but the good news is our match-winner at St James’ Park, @DannyWelbeck, is on our @British_Airways flight home.”

Welbeck, who departed Old Trafford in 2014, has been in sensational form this season. He has so far found the back of the net on five occasions in eight games.

His strike against Newcastle has seen him already equal his tally from last term, in which he scored as many goals across 29 top-flight appearances.
