As soon as the Pittsburgh Steelers agreed to a contract with Russell Wilson, people instantly assumed he would be the starter.
Then, it only became more evident when they traded Kenny Pickett away to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Now, there’s a bit of a debate again, as the Steelers traded for Justin Fields as well.
Considering that, former NFL GM Mike Tannenbaum claims that even though Wilson will most likely be the starter, the players’ contract situation sets the table for Fields to showcase his skills as well.
With both quarterbacks essentially being on one-year deals, it wouldn’t be shocking to see the Steelers giving Fields an opportunity to prove his worth.
“What is fascinating about the Steelers quarterback situation is now both Russell Wilson, and Justin Fields are on one year deals. Not all QB depth charts are created equal, while Wilson is is initially QB1, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Justin Fields have a chance to meaningfully play this year,” the former GM wrote.

Wilson could be the best option for the upcoming campaign, but Fields is obviously younger and has a higher upside at this point in his career.
Both quarterbacks will be starting from scratch with a new offensive coordinator, so no one should have an edge in this race.
Also, this competition is only going to bring the best out of both of these players.
They both feel like they have a lot to prove after everything that has transpired, and while one will do everything in his power to hold onto his starting quarterback job, the other will leave it all on the field in practice to prove that he’s their best choice for the future.
This was a nice string of moves by the Steelers, and it was about time they addressed their quarterback situation.
