Former NHL Player Alex Formenton Surrenders to London Police

According to The Globe and Mail, The Associated Press, and Sportsnet, Alex Formenton has turned himself in to police in London, Ontario, in relation to an incident from 2018 in which five players of the Canadian world junior team were accused of sexually assaulting a woman.

“The London Police have charged several players, including Alex Formenton, in connection with an accusation made in 2018,” Formenton’s legal team said in a statement to The Globe and Mail. “Alex will vigorously defend his innocence and ask that people not rush to judgment without hearing all of the evidence.”

On Sunday morning, Formenton was observed entering the London Police Headquarters accompanied by well-known criminal defense attorneys Daniel Brown and Lindsay Board.

The Globe and Mail revealed on Wednesday, January 24, that London police had ordered five members of the Canadian world junior team from 2018 to turn themselves in. In January of that year, the team was honored with a gold medal in Buffalo; the incident relates to a reported sexual assault that occurred after a gala event in London.

There has been no trial to testify against the accusations and charges. The four other members may or may not have handed themselves in to the authorities at this point. In response to the report released on Wednesday, the London Police Service stated that it is not currently able to provide an update. However, it plans to host a news conference on Monday, February 5, in order to provide further information.

Alex Formenton

Formenton, 24, has played for Ambri-Piotta in the Swiss National League for the previous two seasons. On January 24, the team gave him a leave of absence for personal reasons, enabling him to travel back to Canada.

The Barrie, Ontario native was selected by the Ottawa Senators in the second round, 47th overall, of the 2017 NHL Draft. He last appeared in the league in 2021–2022. Following that season, Formenton was designated as a restricted free agent (RFA); he was given a qualifying offer, but it expired in 2022, and he and the team failed to agree to a new deal by the December 1 deadline in 2022 and 2023.
