Garbine Muguruza won’t be competing on the WTA Tour anymore, as she announced her retirement from professional tennis.
It’s been over a year since the Spanish player last stood on a tennis court. She lost to teenage prodigy Linda Noskova at the 2023 Lyon Open, which was her sixth consecutive loss, and now, also the last match of her career.
The 30-year-old has won two Grand Slam titles in her career, beating both Williams sisters in the finals of those majors, and she also reached the world no. 1 spot in the WTA Rankings.
However, in the recent months, it became apparent that Muguruza didn’t really have interest in continuing her tennis career, as she took time away from the tennis courts, and with every month, it seemed less likely that she would make a return.
When she announced a press conference for Saturday afternoon, many were suspicious that she might either announce her retirement or her comeback, and unfortunately for the tennis world, Muguruza confirmed that she would not return to the tennis courts.
The Spanish player announced her retirement from professional tennis, admitting that it’s time for her to start a new chapter of of her life.
“I feel that it is time to open a new stage, a new era in my life. I was nervous, I wanted to say it. I feel good, although the word retired is a bit strong.”
Also, her former rivals and players who looked up to the Spaniard when growing up congratulated her on her tennis career, as compatriot Paula Badosa was among the first to share their picture with a short caption.
“You were the mirror where I looked at myself since I was little. Thank you Garbi for giving so much to Spanish tennis. It was a pleasure to share these years with you. Happy life, you deserve it.”
