Why Weah and McKennie Might Not Fit into Pochettino’s System
As the United States men’s national soccer team prepares for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino, discussions abound regarding the potential roles of players Timothy Weah and Weston McKennie in the new system.
Herc Gomez shared insights on ESPN, suggesting that Weah and McKennie might be left out as Pochettino implements his strategies.
Prior to his coaching tenure with the U.S. national team and his leadership of globally renowned clubs, Pochettino was known for his formidable playing style in the late 1990s and early 2000s, particularly during his time at Espanyol. The former central defender earned the nickname “El Sheriff” due to his assertive presence on the field.
Having emerged from the youth ranks at Newell’s Old Boys, Pochettino solidified his role at Espanyol, where he captained the team to two Copa del Rey titles. His commanding play and leadership traits laid the groundwork for his later success in coaching.
Pochettino’s managerial journey has included prestigious clubs such as Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Tottenham Hotspur. As the 2026 World Cup approaches, his focus has shifted to leading the USMNT, where heightened attention surrounds his coaching methods.
While much of the analysis around Pochettino revolves around his managerial achievements, understanding his background as a player is essential. Conversations with former teammates have revealed insights into his character and leadership style during his influential stints at Espanyol from 1994 to 2001 and 2004 to 2006.
Recognized as a Leader
Former Espanyol defender Grégory Vignal described Pochettino as a charismatic figure on the pitch. He noted, “He spoke a lot, very typical of a South American guy from Argentina … but he was really good.”
Pochettino’s strong voice and commanding presence played a vital role in organizing the team, according to another teammate, Armando Sá. “His voice was crucial—it guided players on the field and helped us work together effectively,” Sá recalled.
Former midfielder Óscar García remembered Pochettino as an aggressive defender who exuded leadership qualities from the very start of his time at Espanyol. “In our first practice sessions, it was clear he had something special. He was already talking and organizing,” he stated.
A Light-Hearted Persona Off the Field
While recognized for his intensity during matches, Pochettino revealed a more relaxed and humorous side off the field. “Honestly, he was a different guy—calm, funny, and always up for a joke,” Sá noted.
Pochettino made a lasting impression on his colleagues by taking newcomers under his wing. For example, Vignal recalled how Pochettino held informal Spanish lessons over dinner, using everyday moments to bond with teammates.
In another amusing instance, while the team was traveling, Pochettino introduced Vignal to Spanish slang, enhancing his grasp of the language with a dash of humor.
Vignal also remembered a prank that showcased Pochettino’s playful nature. When recommending a swanky restaurant to Vignal, he neglected to mention it was quite expensive. “I think he did that on purpose!” Vignal laughed.
A Surprising Turn to Coaching
Despite demonstrating many traits of a natural leader during his playing career, teammates were often surprised that Pochettino transitioned into coaching. “You never knew, and he never mentioned it,” García remarked. “But he’s having a very successful coaching career now.”
Vignal echoed Garcia’s sentiment, expressing admiration for Pochettino’s rise in management after retiring from playing in 2006.
Achievements in his managerial career include a Ligue 1 title and Coupe de France victory with PSG, as well as leading Chelsea to finals in both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup. Pochettino also guided Tottenham to their first-ever Champions League final.
Sá expressed pride in Pochettino’s accomplishments, hoping to collaborate with him in the future as a fellow coach. Despite the fame he has garnered as a manager, Pochettino’s past as “El Sheriff” remains a cherished part of his identity.
During his recent coaching stint with Chelsea, Pochettino demonstrated that the leader remains, as seen when he greeted a former teammate unexpectedly during a training session in Atlanta, showcasing the depth of their lifelong connection.
