From Struggles to Stardom: How Casemiro Became the Heartbeat of Manchester Unitedn

Will Injuries and AFCON Necessitate Midfield Reinforcements for Manchester United in January?

Casemiro’s journey with Manchester United, which began in 2022, has seen its fair share of challenges and scrutiny. Following a dismal outing in a 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in May 2024, Jamie Carragher, the former Liverpool defender, suggested that Casemiro should seek a transfer, ideally to Major League Soccer or Saudi Arabia, as he was no longer performing at a top-level standard.

“There’s a saying: ‘Leave the game before the game leaves you,'” Carragher expressed harshly. “At this level, he might need to consider his future and take that step.” Just weeks later, during the FA Cup final against Manchester City, Casemiro, who was feeling unwell, opted to remain on the sidelines rather than join the squad. Following a surprising 2-1 victory, he quickly departed for a family vacation instead of participating in the celebrations.

His retention during the 2024 summer transfer period raised eyebrows, yet another setback awaited Casemiro as United fell 2-0 at home to Liverpool in their third match of the 2024-25 season, leading to his halftime substitution in favor of Toby Collyer, who made his Premier League debut. With Ten Hag’s dismissal soon after, Casemiro managed only two more league starts.

As Ruben Amorim took the reins of the team, he too was doubtful about Casemiro’s suitability. During a spell in which the veteran midfielder was absent, Amorim questioned whether he could meet the demands of the Premier League. “Casemiro has different qualities now,” said Amorim in January. “While he is intelligent and savvy, we need players who bring high intensity.” He emphasized that Casemiro’s past achievements spoke for themselves but ultimately stated it was a matter of selection.

Nearly a year later, Casemiro’s standing has dramatically improved. He not only returned to the starting lineup but also serves as a model of resilience for his teammates, proving that tenacity can turn fortunes around.

With young players like Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee possibly facing exits due to limited playtime, demonstrating a successful comeback like Casemiro’s becomes crucial for Amorim. “I showed them how Casemiro worked hard to reclaim his spot,” Amorim noted. “Those who win their position will play, and it’s important they understand this.”

Casemiro has played a key role in United’s resurgence this season. Of the 20 goals conceded by Amorim’s squad across competitions, he has not been on the field for 15. Recently, in matches against Brighton (which ended 4-2 in favor of United) and Tottenham (2-2 draw), the team held off goals until shortly after he was substituted.

Comments on Casemiro’s future are abundant. “I’m not sure what will happen,” Amorim said about Casemiro’s contract situation. “But I hope we can keep him on the team. I’m very satisfied with his contributions.” There are indications that Casemiro, who is well-settled in Manchester, might prefer opportunities in Europe should he decide to leave, with options in MLS or Saudi Arabia coming afterward. A return to Brazil seems less likely. The decision on whether United might pursue one or two midfielders next summer could impact his future, depending on whether Mainoo and Ugarte remain with the club.

Regardless, Casemiro, who will turn 34 in February, is eager to continue his career. “I’ve been playing well and want to maintain my focus and work ethic,” he stated. “We have to aim to stay in rhythm and focused. The Premier League is undeniably a tough battlefield.”

Amorim now relies on Casemiro’s leadership and presence in matches. Questions continue to arise about the team’s efficacy without him on the field. What seemed like an end to Casemiro’s top-level career has now transformed into a vital asset for keeping Manchester United competitive.
