LONDON — Although just 18 years old, Ethan Nwaneri is making significant strides at Arsenal. The young talent emerged as one of the standout players for the team last season, but his journey has faced challenges that have impacted his spot in the first team.
His recent performance, scoring the pivotal opening goal during Arsenal’s 2-0 victory against Brighton in the Carabao Cup, showcased his exceptional skill. The goal came in the 57th minute, following a brilliant setup from Mikel Merino to Myles Lewis-Skelly, who then assisted Nwaneri. The teen confidently placed the ball past Brighton’s Jason Steele and into the net.
With the scoreline, Arsenal advanced to the quarterfinals, where they will face Crystal Palace. Nwaneri’s goal shifted the momentum back to Arsenal as Bukayo Saka later sealed the win with a second goal.
Returning to the squad as Saka recovers from injury, Nwaneri had stepped up admirably when called upon during the latter part of last season, starting eight of eleven games. His performance warranted a five-year contract; however, with the addition of new players, including Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze, competition for playing time has intensified.
Even during this match, Nwaneri’s starting position was challenged by excitement over fellow academy graduate Max Dowman, who at just 15 years and 302 days became Arsenal’s youngest starter in history. Dowman was dynamic in the first half, showcasing his dribbling skills against Brighton defenders.
Nwaneri, recalling the excitement from earlier in his career, showcased his striking ability once again, marking his first goal since April. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised Nwaneri’s impressive performance, indicating he has been proactive in taking his opportunities.
“He was really good,” Arteta commented. “He is going to have those chances, and when they come, he needs to capitalize on them. He took his goal excellently.” The coaching staff aims for players like Nwaneri to make impactful contributions and keep the club’s momentum going. This victory marked Arsenal’s eighth in consecutive matches and their 11th clean sheet in 14 games.
Arteta rotated his squad heavily, with only Eze retaining his starting position, resulting in a somewhat disjointed performance. Brighton had opportunities of their own, missing crucial chances, including efforts from Georginio Rutter and Stefanos Tzimas, while Jan Paul van Hecke sent a header wide from close range.
In the second half, Arsenal improved, following Nwaneri’s goal with Saka’s rebound finish to secure the win. The young winger was substituted shortly before to thunderous applause. Arteta highlighted Dowman’s natural flair and composure on the field, noting his simple approach to the game despite the pressure of being young in the Premier League.
“He plays with courage and determination,” Arteta said. “When we need academy players, they are always prepared.” Nwaneri’s performance was yet another indication of his readiness to contribute at the highest level.
