Game Preview: London Lions host Plymouth City Patriots in enticing top vs. bottom showdown

Game Preview: London Lions host Plymouth City Patriots in enticing top vs. bottom showdown

It’s top against bottom on Friday but with London Lions preparing to host Plymouth City Patriots in the Copper Box arena.

It’s what happens on the court that truly matters and when you have nothing to lose, the Patriots will be motivated to make a statement.

Look no further than when the last time these two teams met as Plymouth became the first to beat the previously unbeatable Lions 94-70 on November 05.

Taylor Johnson led the way with 24 points in a solid all-around performance as the Patriots fired from all cylinders against a London team who let out nothing but smoke.

For the Lions, their form in the BKT EuroCup has been outstanding, but it’s been a mixed bag in the British Basketball League, with two losses from their last five outings since that upset at Plymouth.

However, they will be keen to exact payback on Friday.

A case of the Morgans

In-form Conor Morgan has recorded five double-digit scoring games in his last five and in that spell has gone 17/30 from three-point land, including 5/10 against Leicester Riders back on November 10.

He currently averages 13.7 points, and is leading the League, shooting 46.1% from deep.

Conor is backed up by Matt Morgan, who is currently the British Basketball League’s leading scorer, averaging 19.4 points a contest on 54.5% from the field.

However, by Matt’s high standards, he has cooled off a little since his 32-point explosion against Manchester Giants on November 19, only scoring 16 points total in his last two games.

He will look to heat up again at the Copper Box.

Give us that form back

Since beating the Lions at the Pavilions, Patriots have not been able to build on that by losing their last four games, with two of those being narrow one-possession defeats.

With legendary Plymouth coach Paul James rooted on 500 wins, and with the squad they have, their record doesn’t reflect the performances they’ve put in, with a competitive fire burning inside them.

Johnson leads the Patriots with 17.1 points a game, supported by T.J. Atwood at 14.9 points. The duo have formed a solid partnership this season and will be eager to put on a show in the capital.
