Game Preview: Manchester Giants vs. Plymouth City Patriots: Two teams with something to prove

Manchester Giants host Plymouth City Patriots on Friday, with both sides aiming to climb the British Basketball League standings.

The Giants come into this game having beaten a talented Bristol Flyers outfit 74-68, followed by pushing league leaders London Lions all the way, coming up short 92-84 last Sunday.

Certainly an air of confidence about Manchester as they look to continue this positive spell ahead of their second straight home game.

Conversely, for the Patriots they have struggled this season, but the two wins they have mustered have come against established Play-Off side B. Braun Sheffield Sharks and the league-leading London Lions.

They might not have won on the road yet this season, but they will fancy their chances with the winningest coach in British Basketball League history at the helm and an array of offensive firepower.

Last time out

The two teams have only met once so far, with Manchester escaping with a 77-73 win on the South-West.

On that night, the Giants bench played a role similar to their moniker, outscoring the Patriots’ second unit 33-9, which played a part in the win.

Jamell Anderson played all 40 minutes, going for 19 points and eight rebounds.

Mason Faulkner paced the Plymouth attack with 20 points, including five three-pointers in that haul.

Who to watch

Alongside Anderson, who leads the Giants with 15.8 points a game, Nick Lewis will look to build on his exemplary performance last Sunday against London.

The former B. Braun Sheffield Sharks guard is second in scoring at 14.9 points a game this season on 43% shooting and is not afraid to step up when his team needs it.

The step up from the National Basketball League to the British Basketball League has not phased Taylor Johnson. Quite the contrary, he has showcased his unlimited scoring prowess as he did for Hemel Storm last season.

Johnson currently leads the Patriots in scoring at 16.4 points on 11 field goal attempts a game and shooting a respectable 35.1% from three-point range.
