Game Preview: Surrey Scorchers look to defend their strong New Year’s Day record against London Lions

Surrey Scorchers look to continue their love affair on New Year’s Day, with London Lions targeting a winning start to 2024.

The Scorchers post a 12-1 record on British Basketball League games played on the year’s opening day.

Regardless of their League position, Surrey always seems to rise to the occasion on January 01 and out of those 12 wins, London has been on the receiving end, with the latest loss on this day coming in 2022.

The Lions, though, come into this game in great form with six straight domestic wins under their belt.

The latest, and arguably London’s biggest win of the season came on Friday night when a short-handed squad overcame a strong Caledonia Gladiators side alongside a passionate sell-out crowd at PlaySport.

And as far as recent form is concerned between Surrey and London, it’s played two and won two for the Lions.

The 1 in 12-1.

The one team that beat the Scorchers on New Year’s Day were, in fact, the London Lions.

A 29-15 first quarter paved the way for an eventual 103-92 win at Surrey Sports Park in 2017.

However, that turned out to be London’s sole win on January 01, with the latest loss coming against Surrey in 2022.

They might be riding a six-game winning streak this season, but their overall record on January 01 is a subpar 1-3.

An ex-Lion steering them

After two disappointing seasons, plagued with injuries that saw the Scorchers finish bottom of the British Basketball League standings, the sun is starting to shine in Guildford this term.

Despite starting 0-5 and fans fearing the worst again, Surrey sprung into life in late October, with their first win coming at home against Manchester Giants.

Things have looked up with a further six wins to enter 2024 in eighth spot and the Scorchers boasting a credible 7-13 record.

One player that has certainly been a boost has been British Basketball League veteran Justin Robinson.

The ex-London Lions guard has averaged 12.9 points and 2.7 assists this season, shooting 43% from the field and 38.5% from three-point land.

His season-high was 26 points on 6/11 three-point shooting in Scorchers’ 93-88 road win over the Seriös Group Newcastle Eagles.
