Gary Neville: Doku Struggles to Make Impact Against Arsenaln

Doku Faces Scrutiny in Manchester City’s Cup Final Showdown

During the first half of the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal, Jeremy Doku received criticism from Gary Neville as the Belgian winger struggled to have his usual impact in a game that took a while to gain momentum.

Despite Manchester City dominating possession at times, particularly later in the first half, Pep Guardiola’s team lacked effectiveness in the attacking third. The 23-year-old was among several forwards who found it challenging to make an impression at Wembley Stadium.

Neville’s Take on Doku’s Performance

Commenting on the match via Sky Sports, Neville noted that Doku was not performing at the level expected of him.

“Doku has not quite been able to get going. Ordinarily, he’s a nightmare to play against one on one,” he remarked.

This observation was warranted, as Arsenal seemed intent on limiting the Belgian’s influence, often doubling up on him and forcing him away from dangerous positions, which hindered his ability to drive at defenders.

This strategy dulled one of City’s most unpredictable attacking options and resulted in a first half that was tense rather than entertaining, given the importance of the match.

Arsenal’s Strategy to Neutralize City’s Threats

Arsenal started the match more energetically and created the best chances early on, including a key opportunity for Kai Havertz that was saved by James Trafford. However, City gradually gained more control in the first half, despite not appearing particularly convincing when attacking.

Doku’s lack of influence became even more noticeable, especially since Antoine Semenyo appeared to be a more significant threat on the opposite side, while Erling Haaland found himself isolated for much of the match.

As speculation mounts about a potential exit for Doku from Manchester City this summer amid interest from Atletico Madrid, this performance did little to quell discussions about his long-term role in Guardiola’s plans.

With Ruben Dias ruled out due to injury, City was already facing challenges before the match began, and they needed their offensive players to step up and compensate for the configuration changes in their lineup.
