Needing one hour and 18 minutes to advance, Gauff will next face either No. 11 seed Daria Kasatkina or Yue Yuan.
Elsewhere, Australian Open winner Aryna Sabalenka was defeated by Emma Navarro 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
On the men’s side, No. 9 seed Casper Ruud overcame a first set deficit to dismiss Gael Monfils, 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-4.
Ruud, who has made three Major finals, will next face No. 17 seed Tommy Paul. Paul dispatched Luca Nardi 6-4, 6-3.
Nardi had ousted top seed Novak Djokovic in the previous round.
Thursday’s action in Palm Springs will feature Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek.
