Coco Gauff admitted that she never looks at her ranking, even though she’s currently close to achieving a new career-high.
When it comes to the rankings in tennis, every player approaches it differently. Some know exactly how many points they have, while others have no idea what their position is.
Gauff is one of the players who doesn’t care about the rankings at all. Currently ranked third in the world, she could reach a new career-high second place by outperforming Aryna Sabalenka by 240 points at the 2024 Italian Open in Rome.
Ahead of the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome, Gauff mentioned that she does not focus on rankings. She will also have a new doubles partner at the upcoming event after Jessica Pegula’s withdrawal.
“For me personally, ranking has never been a priority. I just never look. Even if I did look, I wouldn’t care.”
Towards the end of the season, Gauff does pay attention to her ranking, especially to see if she will qualify for the WTA Finals. Currently fifth in the 2024 WTA Race, she monitors her standings.
“I will say maybe like towards the end of the year you’re looking at the live ranking to see if you make the WTA Finals.”
Winning titles, like the 2023 US Open championship, is more important to Gauff than rankings. Success in tournaments indicates her performance level, and rankings follow suit.
“For me it’s more about titles. If you played poorly for a couple of weeks, it can affect your confidence. I’ve never been fixated on rankings. I focus on performing well in tournaments, and the ranking naturally improves.”
While Gauff acknowledges the challenges some players face, she recognizes the privilege of being in the top rankings. Players on the brink of qualifying for major tournaments have a tougher battle to improve their positions.
“I know it is difficult for some people, especially when their ranking fluctuates. It’s more challenging when you’re on the edge of making it to main draws, compared to being comfortably within the top 20.”
